The LEBRETON des GRAPILLIERES Hotel
Curiously, this beautiful mansion (now called Hotel du General d'Elbee) does not bear the name of the man who had it built in 1767.

It has always been known as Lebreton des Grapillières hotel, even though it was Sir BOUCHERON who began the construction.  Sir Boucheron also undertook the drying of the marsh at "The Boucault" in front of the house on the other side of the canal port. S

ir Lebreton des Grapillières, who then acquired it, was most notable as the third mayor of Noirmoutier 1794-1797. His two predecessors were Mr  Mourain Herbaudière and LA RUE DE FRANCY.

Thanks to intelligent restoration, the mansion has kept its architecture intact. It was commandeered during the capture of the island by the Republicans to accommodate the ‘représentants en mission’ (representatives on mission): THURREAU, BOURBOTTE and PRIEUR DE LA MARNE. On the day of the historically infamous shooting of Maurice GIGOST of Elba (General d'Elbee) and his companions, the balconies of the hotel were used as boxes for the Republican personalities to see the "show".

The hotel was used as a residence throughout the nineteenth century, then abandoned in the early twentieth century. It later served as a salt warehouse for a trader and then became the Customs headquarters. Captain BONNIN undertook its restoration after the Second World War, then Mr Savry continued and completed the redevelopment of the famous "Lebreton des Grapillières Hotel”.
