History
L'Hôtel
LEBRETON des GRAPILLIERES
Curiously this wonderful town house
(now hotel d'Elbée) built in 1767 by Sir Boucheron is famous under the name
of Lebreton des Grapillères.
Sir Boucheron was draining some fields in the area "Le Boucault", just in
front of this house on the other side of the harbour, and he sold this house
to Sir Lebreton des Grapillères who will be a few years later, the third mayor
of Noirmoutier (the first was Sir Mourain de L'Herbaudière and the second
Sir La Rue de Francy).
This house learnedly restored, keeps intact its architecture. It was requisitioned
by the republicans during the conquest of the island to put in Sirs Thurreau,
Bourbotte, Prieur De La Marne.
The famous day (January 6th 1794) of historical execution of General D'Elbée
and army's friends, the hotel balconies were used as boxes for the republicans,
witness to the execution show.
Well occupated along the XIXth century, it had been deserted at the beginning
of the XXth.
By turns salt warehouse, custom-house, Capitaine Bonnin began to restore it
but Mr Savry went on and finished the full renovate.
